Fall is my Favorite

Man oh man, it has been a WHILE. Summer seriously flew by (yes, September counts as Summer in San Francisco), and I’ve been running around all over the place for the past few months. Summer in the city was so much fun – Outside Lands, Oyster Fest and plenty of park days – but it was a blast to sneak away to Tahoe, Vegas and Chicago, too.

While there’s nothing like summer, Fall has always been my absolute favorite season. Maybe it’s because I’m a Libra baby, but Fall always ushers in the feeling of starting over for me. I have the urge to set goals for the year ahead, make plans for the holidays and of course, revamp my wardrobe.

10 Things to Love

10 Things to Love

Summer is here in San Francisco, meaning – while there are pockets of sunshine – most of our days are pretty  much blanketed in fog. I’m finding myself dreaming of summer somewhere a little sunnier – Charleston, perhaps? Every summer for the past lord-knows-how-many years, we’ve spent summertime in South Carolina with my cousins, and we always take a day trip (or two!) to Charleston. I’m missing the Southern sunshine a little today, so this week’s 10 Things to Love is a little inspired by that special place.

DIY: Dish Towel turned Pillow Case

One of my weaknesses is throw pillows — I am obsessed with them (seriously, I have about 10 on my bed right now). Anthropologie, Pier 1 Imports, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Target and Etsy are some of my favorite places to find beautiful pillows. But no matter how much I love pillows in all textures, sizes and colors, I just can’t justify paying $50+ for one.

I picked up this dish towel at Anthro a few months ago and have just been holding onto it because I don’t want it to get dirty in kitchen (I can’t imagine ever actually using it on dishes). Sooo I decided to turn it into a cute pillowcase!

It was pretty easy — just a little time consuming because I sewed it by hand.

All you need is:

— A dish towel, tea towel or any fabric of your choice
— A sewing kit (needle, thread, pins)
— Pillow stuffing (You can buy polyfill at any fabric store or rip open an old pillow that you’re not in love with anymore and borrow that stuffing)

This is the dish towel — so cute, right?

First, fold the pillow over and place a few pins at the corners and around the edges, then start stitching. I chose to use colored thread because I thought it would look good with the multicolored pillows.

Once you have securely sewed the pillow case on three edges (the two longer sides and one of the shorter sides if your pillow isn’t a square), you’re ready to start stuffing. Put as much in as you want, depending on how fluffy you want the pillow to be. Sew the remaining side shut.

Ta da! Your brand-new “Anthropologie” pillow.

I had a lot of fun making the pillowcase and I’m looking forward to making more. Let me know if you try this DIY — I’d love to see how you put your own spin on it!

Weekend Update — Beach Day

I know this weekend update is coming a week late (oops!) but this past week has been a little crazy with New Year’s Eve, traveling and getting back into the swing of things here in SF. Excuses, excuses. Anyway — last weekend, Hannah, Gawain and I took a little trip to Cannon Beach to see the coast, hit up Moe’s and (obviously) head to Bruce’s Candy Kitchen. It was the perfect day at the beach and I am SO glad we went.

* Sidenote, this photo was taken when I took a wrong turn driving over to Moe’s and thought I was lost. But instead, I found the homes that get to live with this view all day & night — LUCKY.

The Oregon coast is special (it’s definitely not “the beach” and there aren’t sailboats everywhere and people laying out) but it has its own brand of Pacific Northwest magic that I have loved my whole life.

10 Things to Love

I am so excited to have a week and a half off of work that I get to spend in Portland with my family. All I plan on doing is shopping around, watching movies, baking Christmas cookies, maybe doing a little shopping and spending a lot of time with my kitties. Okay, I guess that’s still a lot of stuff…but I guess the point is that it will be relaxing.

I hope that everyone gets to enjoy a cozy “winter break” with friends and family wherever home may be!

Target + Neiman Marcus + CFDA = match made in shopping heaven

Well, since I’m trying to live frugally until the holidays to save money for prezzies, I guess i’ll just have to dream of all of these amazing goodies from Target and Neiman Marcus’ collab with the CFDA. I’m so excited it’s all finally out — although I do hope that all of those weird commercials during Revenge are coming to a close soon…I am so not into it! Maybe someday i’ll be able to pedal around on an Alice + Olivia bike and bake hipster cookies…
