Wild Instinct: The Hedgehog

Today I came across one of the world’s cutest Instagram accounts — Darcy the Flying Hedgehog (thanks, Buzzfeed!). Needless to say, I thought about cute hedgehogs all day, and my friend (who is actually named Darcy…but isn’t a flying hedgehog) and I discussed them in depth — would they be soft?  Cuddly? Can they make themselves less prickly if they like you?

This is Darcy the Flying Hedgehog:

Darcy!

So adorable, right?

There are a lot of communities on the Internet for hedgehog lovers, and I learned some interesting facts that I thought were worth sharing:

— Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets

— Hedgehogs prefer to live separately from other members of their species, but can form tight bonds with humans

— They have a strong sense of smell but weak eyesight (hey, me too!)

  1. So, my friend Alex got a hedgehog last year named boogie that was white. It bit me super hard because I scared it. But if you put things with your scent in its cage it gets used to it and probably will become nicer. They are cute though!!
